Adobe has never earned more. The market is pricing the layers flattening into a prompt.
Record Q3 revenue ($6.76B, +13%), a record $2.52B quarter of operating cash flow and $24.55B of buyback room — yet the stock trades near 10× forward earnings because net new ARR fell ~38%, free AI tools are chasing Creative Cloud, and both the CEO and CFO seats turn over by December. Does the 1-billion-user freemium funnel convert into durable ARR — or is the paid seat the layer AI flattens? Six analyst lenses, three scenarios, four time horizons.
Gray = Adobe’s actual price from Dec 2024 into today ($364 high Oct 28 ’25 → $190 low Jun ’26 → $270.55 now), built only from dated, sourced closes (2025 month-ends derived from dated monthly changes; no Jan–Feb 2026 closes were sourced, so that stretch is a straight segment). Colored paths = scenario midpoints, probability-weighted (bear 30% · base 45% · bull 25%, bear-tilted for the unresolved ARR debate). Log price axis. Clay ring = Street 12-month consensus $272.31 (39 analysts, range $195–$373, median $260.50). The “flatten” risk lives on the dashed bear path.

Q3 FY26 (quarter ended Aug 28, 2026; reported Sep 10). Valuation as of Oct 22, 2026 close: forward P/E 10.1× vs 14.0× at the FY25 year-end, 26.0× FY24, 35.3× FY23. Peers (Morningstar normalized P/E): ADBE 12.4×, Salesforce 14.9×, Oracle 15.5×.
Six analyst lenses, six answers
The same fundamentals support wildly different conclusions depending on the framework. Each lens is a synthesized expert perspective with its own 12-month target and the multiple behind it.
The Funnel
Over 1 billion monthly users (+20%), creative freemium past 100M (+70%), AI-first ARR above $650M (+150%) and Firefly ARR up 40% in a single quarter. Revenue +13% with non-GAAP EPS +15% at a ~45% operating margin. Conversion is a timing question, not a demand question. Conviction: medium.
The Cash Counter
~$10.6B trailing free cash flow against a $105B cap is a ~10% FCF yield, with a 6.2% buyback yield and $24.55B of authorization left (about 23% of the market cap). Even flat earnings pay you to wait. Conviction: high on the floor.
The Flatten Thesis
Net new ARR fell ~38% (Wells Fargo estimates organic down more than 40%), the creative price increase was deferred, a free open-source clone gained tens of thousands of stars in days, and Q4 needs nearly double Q3’s net new ARR. Seats shrink, the multiple follows. Conviction: medium-high.
The Workflow Case
PDF is the document standard (400B+ opens a year), Photoshop and Premiere are embedded in professional pipelines, and 20,000+ enterprises run on Experience Cloud. Models commoditize generation, not workflow, rights-safety or brand governance. Conviction: medium.
The Tape
Price sits above its 50-day ($255.92) and 200-day ($252.61) averages with RSI ~65 after a 6% one-day jump, and 42% above the June low. Forward P/E near 10× is the lowest of the last four fiscal year-ends (35×, 26×, 14×). Momentum is repairing; valuation is already washed out. Conviction: low.
The Budget Shift
IT budgets are rotating toward AI model and agent spend and away from seat-based application software; the software complex re-rates together. Adobe also carries FX and regulatory noise (UK subscription probe, PERM suspension). Rate relief helps, budget share does not. Conviction: medium.
Wall Street 12-month price targets
What the sell-side expects over the next year. Bars are sorted low to high; the dashed line is today’s $270.55 — the Street is clustered right at it.
12 of ~39 firms, with their latest targets (Sep 11 – Oct 13, 2026) and ratings mapped to buy / hold / sell. Rating mix in October: 9 buy-side, 24 hold, 6 sell-side — the weakest sentiment on record, after Wells Fargo cut to Underweight ($225) on Oct 12 and HSBC to Hold ($267) on Oct 13. Sources disagree on the mean ($262–$283 depending on the analyst set); S&P Global’s $272.31 is used.
Where the stack leads
Synthesized scenario midpoints (mid-year), each = fiscal-year non-GAAP EPS × exit multiple. Returns vs. today’s $270.55. These are illustrative frameworks, not forecasts — the five-year outcome hinges on whether net new ARR re-accelerates. Implied 5-yr price CAGR: bull +27%, base +14%, bear −11%.

Revenue, capex, free cash flow & debt ($B)
Where the money goes. The bull case lives in the free-cash-flow bar; the bear case lives in whether it keeps growing.
Asset-light: capex is ~$0.2B a year (not labeled), free cash flow has grown from $6.9B to $9.9B (FY25) with $10.4B expected for FY26, a ~41% FCF margin. Total debt is $6.8B (Aug 28, 2026) against $5.6B of cash — net debt of ~$1.1B, under one-sixth of a year of free cash flow. FY26E revenue and FCF are consensus; FY26E capex shows the trailing twelve months ($0.21B); debt is the latest balance sheet. Fiscal years end in late Nov / early Dec.
EPS path underpinning the targets ($)
Each target is an EPS estimate times an exit multiple. Here is the earnings ladder the base case is built on.
Non-GAAP EPS. FY25 $20.94 reported; FY24 $18.42 is derived from FY25’s stated +13.7% growth. FY26E $24.48 (company target $24.45–$24.50) and FY27E $27.64 are consensus; FY28–FY31E are the desk’s base-case extension (growth fading from ~12% toward ~9%), not consensus. Base case: $41.50 of FY31 EPS × 12× = $498. GAAP EPS is lower ($17.92 TTM) because of stock comp and acquisition amortization.
The business is growing — the leading indicator is not
Q3 FY26, year-over-year, sorted low to high. Core lines in olive, frontier lines in clay, the one shrinking line in terracotta.
Reported revenue, EPS, ARR and RPO are all in double or high-single digits and AI/freemium lines compound fast off small bases — but net new ARR (the dollars added each quarter) fell ~38%, which is why the multiple is at a trough. Net new ARR is as reported by analysts after the print (BMO, Morgan Stanley, Evercore); RPO growth is the first single-digit print since 2023. Frontier figures are off small bases.
Bull vs. Bear
The valuation argument compresses into one disagreement: is the freemium funnel the next growth layer, or the tell that the paid layer is being flattened?
▲ THE BULL CASE
- Earnings keep compounding. Q3 revenue $6.76B (+13%), non-GAAP EPS $6.13 (+15%); FY26 EPS target raised to $24.45–24.50.
- A cash machine at a trough price. $10.6B TTM free cash flow, 10.1% FCF yield, 9.9× P/FCF versus 13.6× at FY25 close.
- Capital return is large. 9.5M shares bought in Q3; $24.55B authorization left; share count down 6.2% in a year.
- The funnel is huge. 1B+ MAU (+20%), creative freemium 100M+ (+70%), Acrobat AI assistant MAU doubled quarter over quarter.
- AI revenue is real and small. AI-first ARR above $650M (+150%); Firefly ARR +40% quarter over quarter; enterprise AEM, GenStudio and AEP ARR each +20%.
- Sentiment is at a record low. Only 9 of 39 analysts rate it Buy; consensus target $272 sits at the price, so bad news is largely priced.
▼ THE BEAR CASE
- The leading indicator is falling. Net new ARR was down ~38% year over year; Wells Fargo estimates organic down more than 40% and Q4 needs nearly 2×.
- Pricing is on hold. Management deferred the core creative price increase to chase free users in an elevated competitive field.
- Free substitutes are arriving. Open-source ArtCraft clones, Google’s Stitch redesign and AI-native tools target the entry and prosumer tiers.
- Organic growth is flattered. ~$480M of Semrush ARR lifts the 10.2% ARR target; stripped out, implied growth is closer to ~8%.
- Leadership turns over mid-pivot. CEO hand-off Dec 1, interim CFO, no FY27 guide until the December print.
- Earnings quality is noisier. RPO growth slowed to 8%, the first single-digit print since 2023; the FY27 street view assumes ~8% ARR growth that Wells puts nearer 7%.
Risk map — likelihood × impact
Where each risk sits, not just how big it is. The hot corner — likely and high-impact — is pricing power; the existential risks sit one row down in “possible” and in the tail. Horizon: 3–5 years.
- FX headwind
- ARR slowdown
- Freemium drag
- Pricing power
- Regulatory
- Leadership reset
- Deal integration
- AI substitution
- PDF bypass
Pricing-power erosion
Free AI tools cap what Creative Cloud can charge; management itself deferred the core creative price increase to prioritize freemium.
AI substitution
Google, open-source clones or model labs ship good-enough editing, and paid pro seats migrate to cheaper or free tools.
PDF bypass
AI agents read, summarize and sign documents without a viewer, hollowing out Acrobat’s role as the document layer.
ARR slowdown
Net new ARR fell ~38%; the 10.2% ARR target includes ~$480M of acquired Semrush ARR and needs a near-doubled Q4.
Freemium drag
Routing traffic to free tiers builds users now but delays revenue; conversion must show up before FY27 guidance.
Leadership reset
New CEO on Dec 1, an interim CFO and a departed creative lead stack execution risk onto a pivotal guide.
Deal integration
Semrush is in the base and Topaz Labs is due to close in Q4; inorganic growth masks organic softness if integration slips.
Regulatory
A UK competition probe into subscription cancellation fees and a US PERM program suspension add cost and noise.
FX headwind
Management flagged a slight FX headwind into Q4, netting against the Q3 beat in the raised guide.
The jargon, decoded
Hover the dotted terms in the metrics, or scan the desk’s working definitions here.
- ARR
- Annualized recurring revenue: the yearly run-rate of subscriptions at quarter end. $27.5B exiting Q3, +11.2%.
- Net new ARR
- ARR added in a period. It is the leading indicator the Street is watching; Q3’s fell ~38% year over year.
- Freemium / MAU
- Free tiers that bring in monthly active users first and convert them to paid later. Creative freemium passed 100M MAU.
- RPO / cRPO
- Remaining performance obligations: contracted revenue not yet recognized. $22.16B, +8%; cRPO is the next-12-month slice.
- Non-GAAP EPS
- Earnings per share excluding stock comp and acquisition items. All targets here use it ($24.48 FY26E).
- FCF yield
- Free cash flow divided by market cap. ~10% here: about $10 of cash a year per $100 of stock.
- Exit multiple
- The P/E assumed at the end of a forecast horizon. Multiply by that year’s EPS to get the scenario price.
- Prob-weighted
- Each scenario’s price times its probability, summed into one expected value. Default 30/45/25 bear/base/bull.
